So I went to this little Thai place for lunch. It’s sort of cafeteria-style; you order, they give you food, you pay, and you sit down. After I was done eating I realized that I’d never paid for my food. So I told them that and paid. Then I looked at my plate on the table and realized there was nowhere to put it. I thought about handing it to one of the people behind the counter but they looked busy. So I didn’t know what to do and just turned to walk out. Then the woman at the front of the line said, “Can you hand your plate to them?” Great, there’s my answer. I took the plate and handed it to an employee. All well and good. Then the same woman said, “It’s self-service around here,” with a look of disdain, implying that I’m too good to clean my own table.
Were I more nimble with words, I’d’ve said, “Apparently it’s self-righteous around here too,” but sadly that came to me after I left.
