I'm a 24-year-old branding and retail designer in the East Village.

I want roundabouts.

  1. Roundabouts force everyone to slow down somewhat, reducing the number of crashes, and, if there is a crash, the severity of it.
  2. Roundabouts force everyone to move in one direction, meaning there is no way for a t-bone or front-on collision to occur, so there are fewer injuries.
  3. Roundabouts don’t force you to stop and wait for a long signal cycle. Traffic from all directions is moving at all times.
  4. Roundabouts don’t force you to stop at 1 AM when there is no traffic from the other directions anyway.
  5. You can solve the problem of people who are scared to drive into a roundabout, and therefore wait until the entire thing is empty before entering, by simply building the center mound up so they can’t see across. Then they’ll go as soon as there’s a gap in traffic, like they’re supposed to.

Are there any downsides to roundabouts?
