If your hard drive is clicking, you should consider it already dead. There’s a high probability that you are corrupting some of your data with every click. You should stop using it and back it up completely.

and just start up already… takes about 30 clicks… the firewire doesn’t work anymore. I really need to back it up and send it in for a new one.

Sorry, I’ve had this several times and I am de facto tech support for everyone I know, so the very idea of a clicking hard drive instills panic and fear in my heart.
